Marketplace listing optimization glossary

A plain-language glossary of the Etsy and Amazon listing terms sellers meet when optimizing: backend search terms, A+ Content, listing quality score, query matching, attributes, long-tail keywords, conversion rate, rank tracking, A/B testing, and the difference between a research tool and a rewrite tool.

Backend search terms
Hidden Amazon keyword fields (up to 249 bytes) that are indexed by search but not shown to shoppers. Used for synonyms and variants that don't fit the title or bullets. No repeats of title words, no competitor brands, no commas.
A+ Content
Enhanced Amazon description modules (images plus text) available to brand-registered sellers, replacing the plain product description.
Listing quality score
Etsy's signal for how often shoppers who see a listing click and buy it. It feeds search ranking, which is why conversion, not just keywords, affects where you rank.
Query matching
How closely a listing's title, tags, and attributes match the words a buyer typed. The first thing Etsy and Amazon search evaluate.
Attributes
Structured Etsy fields (color, material, occasion, size) that are matched in search and power the left-hand filters. Filling all of them is free ranking surface.
Recency
A temporary visibility boost Etsy gives newly listed or recently renewed/edited listings.
Long-tail keyword
A longer, more specific search phrase (for example 'personalized leather dog collar') that has lower volume but higher intent and less competition than a broad term ('dog collar').
Conversion rate
The share of shoppers who view a listing and then buy. Both Etsy and Amazon feed conversion back into ranking, so it is a core optimization metric.
Rank tracking
Monitoring where a listing appears in search results for target keywords over time. Offered by Helium 10, Jungle Scout, and others.
A/B test (split test)
Showing two versions of a listing to different shoppers to see which converts better. Amazon's free Manage Your Experiments does this for eligible listings.
Sales estimate
A tool's modeled guess at how many units a listing or shop sells, based on marketplace signals. EverBee and Jungle Scout are known for these; they are estimates, not exact figures.
Rewrite tool
A tool that takes an existing listing and produces optimized copy (title, bullets, terms), as opposed to a research tool that only surfaces keyword data. Listingtonic is an Amazon-only example.
