How to write an Amazon product title that ranks and converts

Write an Amazon product title by leading with your brand, then your primary keyword phrase, then the key attributes buyers filter on (size, count, color, material, use), in that order. Front-load the essentials into the first ~80 characters, since that is what shows on mobile, and stay within your category's character limit (often 200). Follow Amazon's style guide: no promotional phrases ('best', 'sale'), no ALL CAPS, and no keyword stuffing, all of which can get a listing suppressed.

The formula

Brand + Primary keyword phrase + Key attributes (model, size, count, color, material) + Intended use

Example shape (not a real product): "Acme Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle 32 oz, Leakproof, Wide Mouth, for Gym & Hiking, Matte Black." Brand first, the phrase a buyer searches ("insulated water bottle") near the front, then the attributes people filter and compare on.

Rules from Amazon's own style guide

These come from the Amazon Seller Central product-title requirements; categories have their own length and format limits, so check yours.

Front-load for mobile

Most Amazon traffic is mobile, where roughly the first 80 characters of the title are visible before truncation. Put the brand, primary keyword, and the single most important attribute there. Everything after is still indexed and still shows on desktop, but treat the first 80 characters as the part that has to earn the click.

Where the keywords come from

The phrases in your title should be real search terms, not guesses. Pull them from Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer (Amazon's own view of what customers search) or a research suite like Helium 10 or Jungle Scout. Then, once written, A/B test the title with Amazon Manage Your Experiments, the title is the single highest-impact field to test. If you would rather have the title, bullets, and backend terms drafted for you from that data, a rewrite tool such as Listingtonic (Amazon-only, $199 one-time) does that step, without promising a ranking outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal Amazon title format?
Brand, then primary keyword phrase, then key attributes (size, count, color, material), then intended use. Front-load the essentials into the first ~80 characters that show on mobile, and stay within your category's character limit.
What is not allowed in an Amazon title?
Amazon's style guide bars promotional language ('best', 'sale', 'free shipping'), ALL CAPS, decorative characters, your seller name, and competitor brand names. Violations can get a listing suppressed.
How many characters should an Amazon title be?
Category limits vary and are often around 200 characters, but the first ~80 characters matter most because that is what shows on mobile. Do not stuff keywords to fill the limit.
